In my research for the ultimate GPS tracking device I've stumbled across many different units. Can you recommend your preferred GPS tracking device that meet the following criteria:
- Runs on GSM network - Programmable or configurable - Internal battery - Relatively inexpensive (< $150 in larger quantities) - Handle temps of up to 120 degrees Something like the SPOT Satellite tracker running on a GSM network would seem like a perfect fit. I'd like to hear what others are experimenting with. Thanks! |

Great idea for a thread. I've done a good amount of research myself and the one device that comes to mind immediately is manufactured by CalAmp. It's called the LMU1000. Here's a good article about some of CalAmp's newer products. We have an LMU1000 in the lab and have been impressed with its form factor, internal GSM/GPS antenna, and battery option.
The other device that comes to mind is Enfora's MT-uL. I have no experience with this device, but reading from this overview page it looks pretty decent. |

Neil, thanks for the offer but I'm still looking into various options. I'd like to hear some more feedback from the forum before I make a decision. I'll probably order a couple of different units for eval purposes. Do you have access to any other GPS tracking devices?

What convenient timing....it looks like this device was just announced today.
SysLOCATE Announces Launch of S3000i GPS Vehicle Tracking Unit Internal antenna, gotta love that! |

The new SysLocate looks to be a pretty slick unit. It just depends on what you are looking for. SysLocate is geared toward the Used Car Automotive market, and when you buy the hardware you are automatically tied to their app interface, which is, of course, an app geared toward a Used Car Dealer looking to repo their vehicle. Cal Amp gives you the flexiblity to use whatever App you want, and choose what type of commands you want to use. Also, I'm pretty sure the new Cal Amp unit with the internal antennae is a slimmer design than Sys Locate's new unit. Just to throw another one into the mix, have you looked at Airlink?

No, I haven't looked into Airlink previously but just pulled up the site. Their devices look pretty robust and expensive. That was just my first reaction after quickly looking at the spec sheets. Also, it didn't look like there's a battery option on any of the devices. Any idea on pricing?
