Default Certification: Costs, Timeframes, etc

Hello,

I'm wrapping up a prototype tracking device built around the Telit GE863-GPS module. I just started looking at what it will take to actually get this thing to market, and was wondering if anyone here would care to share his/her experience with the FCC and PTCRB certification processes.

In particular, I'm interested in ballpark costs, how long it took, and any major gotchas that may have come up.

Also, if you have a testing facility that you liked or disliked, I'd be interested in hearing that too.

Thanks in advance,
-Brett

Default This is a big question

Brett,

Over the last 10 years, I have certified many devices on almost every North American carrier and I have even written the certification requirements standards for some of those carriers. Unfortunately the answer to your question will generate many more questions. What carrier/s?, product class?, is the module certified?, and many more... If you would like to give me a call I would be more than happy to share "best practices" with you. This will save you time and money.

scasperson,

If you do take a call from Brett would you mind sharing your conversation here? I think it would be beneficial to every member of this forum to know more about the "secret" certification process. I'd like to know a simple ballpark figure as I've heard that some certifications can cost up to $25k.

Thanks.
