Default Jasper Wireless Automated Provisioning

I've been doing an extensive amount of research around different M2M carriers. This has mainly been centered around KORE, RACO, and Jasper. I recently stumbled across Jasper's automated provisioning and was hoping someone could shed some light on my foggy understanding.

As a whole, I understand the benefit of the automated provisioning process, but am unclear on a technical level. From the link mentioned above it says you don't start getting billed until:

"The first billing period starts when the device is received by the end customers and the first PDP context is established."

and all testing up until that point is free. My question is that during testing a PDP context will need to be established just to verify the connection and that data is getting across the network. So how does the Jasper network know whether or not I'm in test mode or that the device is actually on the customer's site? I hope that makes sense and maybe I'm overlooking something completely obvious. Would love to learn more about it!

I have not actually used Jasper, but my understanding is as follows.

The device doesn't actually know it is on the customers side. They just give you a small number of free bytes before the billing kicks in. You do your testing within the first free block of bytes, and then when the customer fires up the device and it goes over the margin, billing starts.

Ah, that makes sense. I thought there was some sort of magical SIM with GPS that could geofence itself and automatically determine it was on the customer's site Jasper's automated provisioning seems like an interesting concept and I'll see if I can get in touch with them to learn more about pricing.

Talking Some hints about Jasper :)

Hello all,
First post here, I hope it will be hopeful
Regarding the Jasper automated provisionning, I can give you some details since I work with them on many projects.

Well... basically, a SIM card has many states. Some of them only Jasper can set, and the other ones can be done by yourself. That is basically why they say that the SIM will only be activated once it has ben received by your customer: you can set the Activation Ready state, and once traffic passes, it is automatically swichted to Activated.
Below are details on the several states of a SIM card.

Quote:
Connectivity status of the terminal. Allowable values include:
-Test Ready: Non-billable state. Allows up to 20Kb of test traffic before automatically setting SIM Status to “Inventory”. Only Jasper employees may set a terminal to the “Test
Ready” state.

- Inventory : Non-billable state. Does not allow traffic.

- Trial: Non-billable state. Allows test traffic. Only Jasper employees may set a terminal to the “Trial” state.
- Activation Ready : Non-billable state. Allows traffic. Once traffic passes, SIM Status is automatically set to “Activated”.
- Activated : Billable state. Allows traffic.
- Deactivated : Non-billable state. Does not allow traffic.
- Retired : Non-billable state. Does not allow traffic.
- Purged : Non-billable state. Does not allow traffic.
ah... and moreover, their administration HMI is quite useful, especially when you want to change a SIM status or monitor the current GPRS session of a SIM card.

Gillo,

First off, welcome to M2MForums! This is great information regarding Jasper. We've had a few discussions with them, but haven't done any production deployments with their SIMs. From my knowledge it seems like Japer Wireless has the most advanced and flexible SIM provisioning systems that I've seen.

Numerex Unveils Portal

Ease of use can play an important role in the success of a product or service. A new device management system from Numerex Corp., Home - Numerex - the M2M 'Partner of Choice' for continued and safe connectivity., Atlanta, Ga., aims to help customers more easily deploy and manage devices on a network. NumereXpress, Numerex’s new portal, is designed for use with the company’s SMSXpress and GPRSXpress services.

According to Numerex, the portal should make it simpler for users to manage devices on the Numerex network. NumereXpress is Web-based portal and provides customers with access to capabilities such as device activation, deactivation, and billing plan modification. Customers can also use the portal to access Numerex’s customer support and M2M (machine-to-machine) services.

SMSXpress and GPRSXpress are both proprietary Numerex technologies. SMSXpress allows messages to be routed straight to Numerex Networx SMSXpress Gateway in the company’s data center, instead of routing them through a network service center. Numerex’s GPRSXpress is a system for transmitting GSM (global system for mobile communications) data, and Numerex says it is designed for users who need infrequent data communications for an exception reporting application.
